Project 1

 

Dissertation: A panel study of US police militarization.
My dissertation analyzes a variety of policing characteristics over the 1990s and 2000s.  I used publically available data to craft the first panel study of its kind, with over 3,000 US police departments.  From this, I analyze militarization over the time period, the first empirical analysis of this kind so far.  I follow this chapter up with an analysis of factors that lead to police militarization (chapter 2) and an analaysis of how militarization affects policing outcomes (chapter 3).  Upon completion, the data will be made availble not only to verify my results, but also to provide a rich source of policing information.

Strategic Interaction during Protests: How does framing and action interact in the context of protest policing? 

During the Madison protests in 2012, hundreds of thousands turned out over the course of a month to protest against legislation that would cripple public unions.  I was present during the occupation of the capitol building, and noticed something peculiar: police officers were not antagonized, but instead were embraced as fellow workers.   In this project, I used personal experience and interviews to propose a theoretical typology for dynamic police-protestor interactions, based on the personal role struggles of police officers.

Changing to Survive: How have American unions re-established themselves in the face of ongoing decline? 
In April of 2009, the AFL-CIO and Change to Win released a joint statement in support of Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  Marking the culmination of a nearly two decades long shift within the organized labor movement, this statement presented an opportunity to analyze how labor unions have attempted to reinvent themselves in the face of ongoing decline.  For this project, I analyzed the development of the policy and interviewed national labor leaders to discover its implications.  I argued that the policy was indicative of change, albeit incomplete.
